Feeding Schemes

In an effort to alleviate the suffering resulting from poverty in South Africa, much of it caused by HIV/AIDS, the Parish introduced a feeding scheme for children, whereby approximately 150 children from Mashishimale and 100 from Makhushane are each given one meal a week.

The meal comprises a thick soup/stew made from meat, beans, samp, soup mix, lentils, cabbage, carrots, split peas and two slices of bread.

This scheme has been in operation since November 1998 and we have now reached the point where members of the community do the cooking in big cast iron pots over an open fire. A local butcher donates 10kg of meat each week, and we sometimes get donations of day old bread.

The balance is funded from donations from here and abroad, and the sale of jumble.
